Sažetak
Basic conditions for timely undertaking of relevant maintenance measures are a good knowledge, and permanent updating of information about the carriageway conditions, either by temporary site and laboratory examinations, measurements or by visual inspection. At the initiative of HRVATSKE CESTE d.o.o., for management, construction and maintenance of national roads, at the Building Construction Faculty of the University of Zagreb, the Roads Institute prepared a Road damages catalogue, and Instructions for visual inspection of national roads carriageways, taking into account the existing Croatian experiences along with the experiences of other countries, especially those of Austria and Switzerland. The Catalogue presents characteristic damages which appear on asphalt carriageways. The Catalogue is conceived in such a way to present the carriageway damages/surface roughness in five basic groups, as per the way and place of their appearance. This Catalogue provides a uniform identification of different kinds of damages/roughness of carriageways at both – design and network levels. It is normal that, for the purpose of actual network level condition, it is impossible to register all characteristics so that, at the visual evaluation of the carriageway condition, they should be brought to the applicable measure, which was done in the Instructions for visual inspection of national roads carriageways, which can – with certain modifications – be applied to other road categories as well. Although visual observations are subjective, and the objectivity and interpretation of the results of observations are rendered more difficult, the information obtained in such a way is irreplaceable for evaluation of the carriageway condition.
