Sažetak
The Plitvice Lakes National Park in the Dinaric Alps, Central Croatia, consists of a series of lakes, tufa barriers and waterfalls, where calcium carbonate form tufa barriers and precipitate as lake sediment. Anthropogenic pollution and its consequences to eutrophication process have been investigated by analyses of five surface sediment cores, 40 cm long, taken from 4 lakes. Locations were selected on sites with pronounced eutrophication process, as well as on sites with no eutrophication. Sedimentation rate was determined by 210Pb and 137Cs methods. Mineralogical analyses show that calcite is the major component, except for one core in which relative variations are perceived for the calcite and dolomite. Concentration of trace elements, as well as organic matter, decreases from uppermost lake downstream indicating mainly natural origin due to transport from the main springs. All concentrations are below the limits stated by Council directives and there is no significant difference along sediment cores.
