Sažetak
The multilamellar and multivesicular giant vesicles were prepared by catanionic surfactant, dodecyltrimethylammonium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (DDTMA-DDBS). The kinetics of giant vesicles formation is slow and observable by optical microscopy. Transformation from continuous bilayers of spherical topology to fluctuating tubular and to spherical giant vesicles has been followed by phase-contrast and polarization microscopy. Proposed mechanism of transformation involves wrinkling, bending, swelling, splitting, balling to vesicle fusion (attractive interactions) and fragmentation (intermembrane repulsion). X-ray analysis of solid crystalline DDTMA-DDBS revealed smectic mesophases with the lamellar thickness of d/Å ; ; = 42.20. Dividing of the mean crystallite size with the lamellar thickness revealed that the average stack of lamellae (mesomorphite) consisted of over 6000 bilayers.
