Sažetak
Amphotropic behavior of didodecyldimethylammonium- dodecylbenzene sulphonate (DDADPhSO3) has been investigated by various methods. The formation of a novel catanionic surfactant by spontaneous batch experiment from equimolar solutions can be represented as (CH3)2(C12H25)2N+ + Br¯ ; ; ; + C12H25PhSO3¯ ; ; ; + Na+ ↔ (CH3)2(C12H25)2N SO3PhC12H25 + Na+ + Br¯ ; ; ; . DDADPhSO3 exhibited complex thermal behavior characterized by several phase transitions in the solid state as proved by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and optical birefringence using a polarizing microscope. On heating, optical micrographs indicated smectic structure of liquid crystalline phase. Interplanar distance, relative intensity, Miller indices (from diffraction pattern at small angles and at room temperature) for DDADPhSO3 confirmed the smectic structure in the solid crystalline phase. Formation of vesicles in aqueous solutions revealed that DDADPhSO3 has amphotrophic properties.
