Sažetak
Objectives were to investigate the influence of 1992-1995 war on dental health in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH). Cross sectional epidemiological study, focused on dmft and DMFT indices, was carried out in four cantons of the Federation of BH. A representative sample of 957 subjects was divided into three age groups: 6, 12, and 35-44 years, and the subjects were clinically examined. Since the study was performed in 1997, we hypothesized that the dental health of 6-year-olds represented current dental care in BH, that the consequences of war would be reflected in 12-year-olds, and that the population of 35-44 years represented the dental care before the war. Dental health of adult population in all four cantons was rather poor with mean DMFT between 13.2 and 16.2. Poor dental health could be associated with relatively low level of dental hygiene and imperfections of pre-war dental care. In 12-year-olds, DMFT varied between 4.7 and 7.7. Very high mean DMFT in Posavska and Herzeg-Bosnia cantos (7.2 and 7.3, respectively) can be explained by poor dental care before the war and destruction of dental facilities in the war. In 6-year-olds dmft varied between 2.2 and 5.7 and was the worst in Posavska canton, which lost half the dentists during the war. The dental care in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been lagging behind the European standards before the war and the war had serious adverse effects on dental health.
