Sažetak
The development of multichannel sound reproduction systems gave the possibility to audio producers to place multiple (virtual) sound sources in the whole horizontal plane around the listener. In this paper, some limitations of the hearing mechanism were examined concerning the task to localize a certain sound source from a sound field made by multiple simultaneous sources. Two different test signals were used - narrowband pink noise and amplitude modulated full range white noise. The sources were placed on a circle in the horizontal plane, equidistant from the listener. In the case narrowband noise was used, the goal was to choose from which source the highest frequency noise originated, depending on the number of concurrent sources (up to four), their distance, and their frequency. Similarly, when using white noise, the goal was to choose from which source the modulated noise originated depending on the number of sources (up to six), their distance and the source cross-correlation. This experiment was repeated also in another test room with different acoustical characteristics to find out how the space influences the given results. Some tests used correlated referent and interference signals in order to find how the hearing mechanism localizes highly correlated signals.
