Sažetak
Analyses of 17 Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus corpses found at the end of 2004, confirmed the presence of geocid G5 poison which contains an active substance of a chemical compound carbofuran, a component found in the majority of pesticides used in Croatia and available over-the-counter in farming chemical outlets. It was posed in a sheep meat in the environment of the island of Rab, although Law on the protection of nature prohibits the use of poison or stupefying baits. The purpose of poisoning was directed primarily against wild boars which destroy agricultural crops, and endanger sheep breeders, and farmers, as well as against stray dogs which roam around the island. When uncovered, the affair provoked numerous public debates although it failed to point out the hazards to which human lives are exposed in such circumstances. Not one medical perspective was presented to the public with regard to potential consequences for human health. It is necessary to create and carry out a program that would tackle the problem area with an emphasis on education of people who hunt, breed cattle and do farm work.The program for prevention of poison should attempt to detect the presence of poison in dead animals. It should additionally exhibit the multidisciplinary features of the problem by including the Ministries of Health Nature and Environmental Protection, of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, hunters’ associations, non-governmental organizations dedicated to the protection of nature and environment, and representatives of biological, ecological medical, and chemical professions.
