Sažetak
The antipsychotic drugs (chlorpromazine, haloperidol, clozapine) appear to be able to cause some changes in GABA synthesis, although the nature of the changes depends on the brain region studied as well as the antipsychotic drug used. Unlike haloperidol, which in low doses decreased the synthesis of GABA in the substantia nigra and caudate nucleus, both chlorpromazine and clozapine appeared to increase GABA synthesis in the substantia nigra and pyriform cortex. Accordingly, the changes in GABA synthesis caused by these drugs do not appear to correlate with their ability to block dopamine receptors, neither to their ability to produce extrapyramidal side effects as the butyrophenone derivative produced effects different from those of chlorpromazine.
