Sažetak
Purpose of review This review summarizes current knowledge about ultrasound value in monitoring of the structural and functional changes of uterus and ovaries during menstrual cycle. Recent findings The data supporting more frequent right side ovulation have been challenged with a recent data that ovulation occurs randomly independent on the side. The "follicular wave phenomenon", providing a new model for ovarian function during the menstrual cycle has been described. Follicular development occurs in wave-like fashion, and women with two waves have earlier endometrial development due to earlier increase of the dominant follicle estrogen production. Myometrial contractions during menstrual cycle should be used in consideration in the endometrial thickness assessment. Uterine-ovarian arterial blood flow impedance helps in understanding normal physiology of menstrual cycle and may be of use in assisted conception procedures. Summary At present, ultrasound has an important role in non-invasive assessment of endometrial and ovarian cyclical changes during menstrual cycle. Some of those may be of particular importance in assisted conception procedures. Further work is likely to help in understanding of its full diagnostic potential.
