Sažetak
The purpose of plasmapheresis is the removal of autoantibodies to the myelin sheaths from circulation of the patients. This prospective study included patients hospitalized due to the severe acute exacerbation of multiple sclerosis, previously on corticosteroid therapy which failed to produce any substantial improvement in their clinical picture. The severity of their clinical picture was assessed on admission and upon completion of plasmapheresis, using EDSS. After 10-15 plasmapheresis sessions performed over 13-21 days, a significant regression of the clinical symptoms of the disease was recorted in all patients.Study results suggested plasmapheresis to be indicated in patients with acute exacerbation of the multiple sclerosis in whom standard therapy has failed to produce any improvement.
