Sažetak
Scientists whose primary research area is Medical and Biological Engineering and Science have always been aware of the multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity of their research field and therefore have been leaders in the process of integrating engineering with biomedical and basic life sciences as well as with clinical practice. In today's society, innovation and development in medical and biological engineering and technology are increasing their socioeconomic importance in achieving knowledge-based society European states are aiming at. The International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE) is an integrating power in the biomedical engineering community worldwide, but it has recognised the need for establishing regional alliances that could approach the regional challenges more efficiently and for the benefit of the human health and wellbeing regionally and globally. In Europe, these efforts have resulted in creation of the European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES) in 2004. EAMBES is an umbrella organisation of European national and transnational societies (some of them being affiliated to the IFMBE), academic and research institutions, industry, open also for other players in the field. EAMBES promotes MBES in the creation of the European Higher Education Area, the creation of the European Research and Innovation Area (EHEA), and the use of health technology in biology, medicine and healthcare. In this paper, the objectives of the European Alliance are presented together with a short history of its development and plans for the future activities of the Alliance. The need for establishing other regional alliances in the field of biomedical engineering and science will be discussed too.
