Sažetak
ESP courses are still designed intzuitively and based on experience. The paper argues for the increasing role of research in that domain. The main levels of research helping in ESP materials design can be outlined as lexical, syntactical and discourse. Application of corpus analysis, use of text concordances, and other methods of analysis could help in making a bridge between the linguistic research and materials design and teaching practice. The advantage of such approach, apart from its objectivity, is the availability of authentic examples and in the better accounting for the appropriateness regarding learner's needs. The lexical level should include frequency analysis, the compiling of minimal vocabularies and thesauri, establishing word-families and word-formation rules. The syntactic level (usually sentence level) comprises obtaining inventories of the most frequent and the most useful grammatical categories. The discourse level includes the determining of formal and linguistic characteristics of text types relevant to the given field, and focuses on the readability of texts, which should reflect the readability level of average authentic texts.
