Sažetak
Eight piglets were infected, each with 5, 000 muscle larvae of Trichinella spiralis. One group of piglets inoculated with T. spiralis larvae was also injected with 50 mg of iron in 0.5 ml of dextran subcutaneously at intervals of three to four days. Blood samples were taken every two to four days during a trial period of 48 days. Three uninfected piglets served as controls. Mean values of unsaturated iron-binding capacity in the iron- injected trichinous piglets was lower than in the trichinous piglets. The average number of leukocytes in the trichinous piglets was higher than those in the iron-injected trichinous piglets. The average level of iron in the liver of iron-injected trichinous pigs was higher than in the trichinous group. Serum iron, total iron-binding capacity, saturation concentration, erythrocytes, haemoglobin, haematocrit, mean cell volume, mean cell haemoglobin, mean cell haemoglobin concentration, iron concentration in the spleen and number of larvae per gram of tissue were at similar levels in infected and uninfected piglets.
