Sažetak
The global maps of geographical distribution of multiple sclerosis (MS), and hypothetical estimations place Yugoslavia into a zone of low or medium frequency. Epidemiologic studies carried out during last 15 years do not favour alredy mentioned evaluations. The first intensive study has been carried out in the regions of Rijeka and Gorski Kotar. The prevalence rate of 35.5/100 000 and the incidence rate of 2/100 000 inhabitants have been found. A small cluster was registered in Gorski Kotar. In Bačka region, in the northern plains of Yugoslavia the prevalece of 33.8/100 000 was found. In Istria, on the very northwest of Yugoslavia the prevalence was 25/100 000. The incidence rate of 1.5/100 000 year have been found. A through investigation of the epidemiology of MS in the regions of Šumadija and Pomoravlje, in the central part of Serbia, was carried out from 1978 to 1983. The prevalence of 20.3/100 000 inhabitants was found. It was above the average in the urban part of the region (36.4/100 000 ) while the low one of 12.3/100 000 was found in the rural part. The incidence was 0.5-2.0/100 000 year, while the mortality rate varied from 0.53 to1.61/100 000 year. In Belgrade the prevalence rate was 15.3/100 000 (hospital cases). In the limited populations, the following studies of prevalence have been carried out so far: in Split (30.2/100 000 ), in Zagreb (40/100 000 ), and in eastern Macedonia (19.4/100 000 ). The necessity for further investigations of the unexplored areas and the usefulness of an intensive research of MS prevalence in small well-defined communities, at critical points on the net of parallels and meridians, have been pointed out.
