Sažetak
Tumor associated antigens (TAA) of the Melanoma antigen E (MAGE) family belong to the cancer/testis (CT) TAA subclass encoded by genes whose expression is detectable in different histologically unrelated tumor types and in a limited number of healthy tissues. The expression of MAGE family TAA has mostly been studied in clinical materials at the gene expression level by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This technology, however, provides only limited information, since, for instance, it does not allow, the quantification of TAA positive cancer cells. Such data are of crucial relevance in clinical studies, since effective immunization targeting TAA expressed in low percentages of tumor cells, would likely be of modest therapeutic relevance. Thus, a major effort has been focused on the generation of serological reagents identifying TAA determinants in clinical specimens. A small panel of these reagents has indeed been produced and used to support PCR data and to quantify, at the cellular level, the extent of their expression in various tumor samples. In the recent past our group has started to produce immunohistochemical evidence of cancer/testis protein detection in breast cancers and here we review our results.
