Sažetak
Background and Putpose: We investigated in vivo effects of alpha-MSH on experimentally induced mucosal injury of rat gastrointestinal system. Materials and Methods: Cytoprotection exerted by alpha-MSH in rat gastrointestinal system was evaluated by means of two standard experimental models suitable for the pharmacological screening of new drugs: 1. ethanol induced gastric lesions, and 2. TNBS induced colitis. Results and Conclusion: Neuropeptide alpha-MSH exhibited strong, statistically significant and pharmacologically relevant gastrointestinal protection. Additive protective effects were observed when a-MSH was administered in combination with met-enkephalin (another important pro-opiomelanocortin peptide).
