Sažetak
The serious dieback in pines caused by the pathogenic fungus Sphaeropsis sapinea were observed in April 1992 and were reported in Croatia for the first time since 1957. From 1992, research has been carried out to reveal the presence of the fungus and its possible injurious impact on the Pinus species throughout the country. The symptoms observed in the field were dieback of young shoots, branches and whole crowns of pine trees. Laboratory analyses of the samples revealed the dominant presence of S. sapinea in the affected needles and in the bark of dieback shoots, twigs and branches. An inoculation experiment on 2.5 year-old Pinus nigra seedlings confirmed the pathogenicity of the fungus. Although S. sapinea was found on several pine species, only P. leucodermis and P. nigra, in urban areas and in plantations, turned out to be very susceptible to fungus attack, mainly when predisposed by water deficit.
