Sažetak
Psychological stress is one of the main effectors that influence health in the modern world. Metabolic response to stress is a very complex physiological process that involves numerous organs and organ systems. Many stress-induced molecular changes have been documented in the past years, but key molecular mechanisms that lead to detrimental effects of stress are still not known. In addition to hormonal signals, current physiological state and past events appear to be essential regulators of the cellular response to stress. Since protein glycosylation is a kind of "cellular memory", we hypothesized that it might have an important role in the stress response. In the last couple of years we have found numerous stress-induced changes in protein glycosylation, lectin expression and glycosyltransferase activity. Interestingly, in some systems different stressors were found to have exactly opposite effects. Notable example is the activity of sialyltransferases in rat models of psychological stress. Although influenced by exactly same hormonal signals, in some tissues sialyltransferase activity was induced, while in others it was suppressed.
