Sažetak
Research into the influence of a lactation phase on milk production and number of somatic cells involved 30 sheep of the Travnik breed, all of equivalent age and physical development and in the second lactation. Milk quantity was determined on the basis of individual measurements of morning and evening milkings. The number of somatic cells was established in 221 samples. In the course of the 235-day lactation period the sheep produced an average of 137 litres or 593 ml/day of milk. Stage of lactation was found to have a significant influence on both overall quantity of milk (P<0.05)and on the number of somatic cells (P<0.01). At the beginning of the lactation period the number of somatic cells in milk reached its peak (1.57x106/ml). The lowest daily production of milk (480 ml), and the lowest number of somatic cells (0.26x106/ml) was established at the end of the lactation period.
