Sažetak
The area of Velika Paklenica canyon and Rujno has been the subject of detail geological mapping between 1962 and 1969 for the basic geological map of former Yugoslavia (Sheets Gospić, Obrovac, Udbina and Zadar). Nevertheless, Quaternary deposits in that area, being just a minor occurrence, have been considered a secondary subject and were given no attention within detail exploration. Thus, the only determination given referred to fluvioglacial conglomerates in Rujno area and colluvial debris apron above the V. Paklenica canyon, although Quaternary deposits are present in the whole length of the canyon. Leon Nikler (1973) first studied Rujno deposits in more detail and described a well preserved “ terminal” moraine ridge located at 920 m a.s.l. More complex geomorphological study of the same part of the Velebit Mountain was conducted by Belij (1985) who reconstructed the path and extent of the corresponding valley glacier. During the past ten years new evidence about glaciation of the northern Velebit Mountain were presented by Faivre (1991), and Bognar & al. (1999). Our recent and still ongoing detailed sedimentological studies of this area yielded new results in sediment origin interpretation and palaeogeographical picture. An overview of these results is presented in this paper.
