Sažetak
The aim of the study was to explore aspects of psychic functioning in mothers of eating disorder patients. Thirty mothers of female eating disorder patients and fifty-one mothers of females with no history of eating disorders participated in the study by completing the Defence Style Questionnire, State and Trait Anxiety Inventory and Toroto Alexithymia Scale. There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in defence styles or alexithymia. Mothers of eating disorder patients have significantly higher state and trait anxiety scores. The notion of mothers of eating disorder patients as narcissistic and neurotic has been challenged. The examined aspects of personality cannot corroborate the descriptions of mothers derived from clinical observations. Some aspects of the specific interpersonal relationship between mothers and daughters are probably influenced by anxiety. The implications of these findings on therapy are discussed.
