Sažetak
Mastication is a highly coordinated neuromuscular function that involves fast effective movements of the jaw and continuous modulation of force. The aim of this study was to evaluate the human elevator and depressor muscle activity during continuous chewing in dentate subjects of different age groups. Forty dentate subjects participated in this study, and they were divided in two groups. Surface EMG recordings were obtained from left and right anterior temporal muscle, left and right masseter muscle and from the submandibular group in the region of the anterior belly of digastrics muscle on the left and right side. The EMG registrations were made during continuous biting with the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) in the position of maximal intercuspation of teeth (MI), during maximal wide opening (Omax) as well as during five minutes of mastication. The results showed that during mastication values of each muscle myoelectrical activity were higher in the group of young people. Elderly subjects had to use higher potential of muscle activity in order to perform mastication. In the group of elderly people muscle activity continuously decrease from first to third minute, while in the group of young people increases and decreases of muscular activity interchange.
