Sažetak
Organochlorine compounds are persistent contaminants of the environment. Their widespread use produces residues in foodstuffs. Once entering the animal or human organism owing to their lipophilic properties they can be accumulated in various organs, also in those which are involved in the reproductive system. The aim of this study was to examine the accumulation of organochlorine insecticide lindane (gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane) in brain, testis and prostate, as well as in other organs of rat as experimental model.
Fischer strain male rats were treated with lindane either intraperitoneally, in daily doses of 17.5 mg/kg b.w. (50% of i.p. LD50) during 10 days, or orally, in daily doses of 60 mg/kg b.w. (50% of oral LD50) during 4 days. After extraction and purification samples were analyzed by gas-chromatography with electron-capture detection.
In control animal tissues, which received only vehicle, the concentrations of lindane were found as follows: brain > prostate > testis. After intraperitoneal treatment with lindane the concentrations in these tissues rised for 54%, 181% and 344%, respectively.
The highest concentrations of lindane after oral treatment was detected in abdominal fat (690 ng/g), but high uptake was found also in organs involved in reproductive system, like hypothalamus (204 ng/g), anterior pituitary (184 ng/g) and prostate (278 ng/g).
Exposure to lindane either in the environment, or through food-chain, could result in its accumulation in human organs and tissues. Continuous presence of this organochlorine compound in the organism opens the possibility of its interference with various physiological processes, what can lead to toxic effects.
