Sažetak
Air is an important transport medium for persistent chemicals in general. Data of POP concentrations measured at European remote or background sites within regional monitoring programs (EMEP) and various other research programs. The temporal trends in Central Europe are measured at Košetice observatory. These data from long- and middle-term monitoring and reaseach project will be compared with data which were obtained in Croatia. Destruction of industrial facilities and spilling of chemicals have the worst effect for the environment (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Yugoslavia). During Balkan wars (Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and operation "Allied Force" in the spring of 1999, the burning or damaging of industrial and military targets in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia, resulted in the release of a large number of chemicals into the environment. The results of these conflicts (from the burning or damaging of industrial and military targets in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia) can led to the long-range transport of these pollutants round the world and can be long-term source of problems. Because there has been some speculation about the possible inflow of spilled contaminants from the karstic soil of the city Zadar to the coastal sea from other sources inside the city, the chlorinated hydrocarbons in the atmosphere and soil of several parts of city Zadar were investigated and the results are presented in this paper. As an air background area, the meteorological station Zavižan was selected.
