Sažetak
Distribution and abundance of individual phytoplankton groups in the overall phytoplankton biomass of the northern Adriatic (transect Po River mouth - Rovinj) were determined over an annual cycle (January – December 2000) by analyzing the composition of their photosynthetic pigments. Besides chlorophyll a, the phytoplankton cells contain a number of other chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments and each phytoplankton group contains a characteristic composition of individual photosynthetic pigments. This fact can be used for the chemotaxonomic characterization of phytoplankton population. Individual biomarker pigments were determined by reversed-phase HPLC technique using serially coupled spectrophotometric and spectrofluorimetric detectors. The biomass concentration and structure of phytoplankton population were mostly affected by freshwater supplies from the Po River, especially in the western area of the basin. The influence of freshwater discharges was less visible on the locations more remote from the Po river mouth. Stronger freshwater pulses during the autumn months triggered an intensive bloom of chlorophyll biomass, the structure of which was dominated by diatoms as reflected by enhanced concentrations of fucoxanthin. The most abundant phytoplankton group in the eastern area of the transect were prymnesiophytes, characterized by the chemotaxonomic pigment 19'- hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin. The summer period was characterized by enhanced concentrations of green algae in the bottom layer, as indicated by increase of characteristic biomarker chlorophyll b.
