Sažetak
Data are presented on nm23-H1 protein presence in human invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix, and its relationship to clinical signs of disease progression (metastases development, local disease reccurrence, 5-year survival) and FIGO stage of disease. Protein expression was examined on 152 formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tumor samples using immunohistochemical peroxidase antiperoxidase method. in general, the number of nm23-H1 positive tumors among FIGO stages Ib (2), IIa/b, IIIb and IVa, regardless of survival rate, declined. Reccurence of local disease and distant metastases development were predominantly recorded in patients with nm23-H1 negative tumors. The difference in 5-year survival of patients with nm23-H1 positive versus negative tumors is obvious and statistically significant at the level of (p<0.01). According to our results, regularly treated patients suffering from nm23-H1 negative tumors exhibit in a higher percentage (statistically significant) local relapse illness, distant metastases development and shorter survival. Our results clearly show correlation between nm23-H1 expression and both, patients survival and disease stage. This suggests that nm23-H1 gene plays a very important role in growth control and metastases development and may serve as prognostic marker for patients with squamous cell carcinoma.
