Sažetak
Financial system development is the backbone of the transition process. Without a sustained development of the financial system it is difficult to achieve and sustain high rates of growth needed for catching up with the EU. We shall look at how the financial system looks like in Croatia, where it stands in comparison with the Central and East European candidate countries, and in comparison with the EU. What is the structure of the financial system, what are the main shortcomings, and what are the strengths? Shall the system continue to develop more in the line with the "Anglo-Saxon" model or with the "German model"? How to regulate and supervise the system? These and other questions will be dealt with in the present paper.
