Sažetak
In order to prevent environmental degradation and the loss of natural wealth specific monitoring programmes are needed to estimate the water quality and the health of its biological resources. The overall objective of the “ CROWAT project” is to establish collaboration between Croatian and Norwegian research groups to design, develop and implement a biomonitoring system for Croatian freshwater, estuarine and coastal marine waters.During the first two years of the project (2002-2003) we used both selected caged organisms and organisms collected from their natural habitat (bivalves and fish) at three locations in the Middle Adriatic (Kaštela bay) and three locations in Eastern Slavonia (river Drava and Dunav). Endpoints in this study include a suite of biomarker methods: metallothionein concentration, ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity, benzo(a)pyrene hydroxylase (BaPH) activity, acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity, multixenobiotic resistance (MXR) activity, glutathione (GSH) concentration, vitellogenin concentration, DNA damage measurement (comet assay and micronucleus test), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) metabolites concentration and lysosomal membrane stability measurement. The Norweigan Research Council is acknowledged for the support of Project No. 150463.
