Sažetak
Selection for athletics is a long lasting process performed several times during sports career of an individual. It has been so far documented that talent of children can be detected by various criteria throughout the entire childhood (Čudina-Obradović, 1991). The initial selection is performed either through a trial or testing (by measuring aptitude) with the child's potential in focus. A system of school sport competitions in Croatia regards the grade categories with two classes (years) in one category (fifth and sixth grade and seventh and eighth grade of elementary school). It means that potential athletes are systematically followed up by the Croatian athletics not earlier than the 11th year of age. On the contrary, in sport developed countries with rich tradition, such as Finland, for example, competition system for the young regards only one-year (chronological age) category from the 9th till 16th year. No wonder, then, that it is possible to select and orient Finish children aged 11 to 13 years in particular groups of athletic disciplines, which in Croatia can hardly be the case. The goal and subject of the study was to determine the age-specific differences in morphological and motor space (basic and sport specific alike) among the fastest girls of Zagreb in 60m run. The examinees pertain to three age categories (11, 12 and 13 years), but to two class categories only (5th and 6th grade of elementary school). The final objective is to document that the Croatian model of recognizing talented children is not sensible enough and that it should be modified.
