Sažetak
In the period of twenty years: between 1982 and 2002 we noticed 41 sudden and unexpected death due to recreational physical exercise in Croatia. Five of them were male physicians-specialists, aged 34-67 years. All of them were without symptoms. The paper deals with the aspects of the interrelationship between physical exercise and cardiovascular risk in five physicians aged 34-67. In three of them a forensic autopsy was performed, and in all coronary heart disease was found, with no signs of acute myocardial infarction. In two of them who were not been autopsied, in one an alcohol cardiomyopathy was probably a reason for malignant arrhythmia, and the other had arterial hypertension and excessive hyperlipoproteinaemia, and probably silent myocardial ischemia due to coronary heart disease was probaly a reason for malignant arrhythmia. In Croatia there are 4 957 male physicians-specialist, and a rate of sudden cardiac death during or immediately after physical exercise in this group reached 33.6/100 000. The frequency of differences between the population as a whole and physicians, a chi-square test =24.75, p=0.000065. This adds a new social and life style dimension to this study: obviously physicians overstrain their health.
