Sažetak
Anton Švajger (1935-2003) was a pioneer of mammalian embryology, a man with profound knoledge and understanding of mammalian histology and embryology so valuable to his students and collaborators. His main scientific contribution to mammalian embryology were the results which changed the classical concept of the origin of germ layers. He showed that the epiblast or primitive ectoderm has the potential to give rise to tissue derivatives of all three definite germ layers and therefore is the source of mesoderm and endoderm. These discoveries were highlighted in the context of recent progress malian embryology.
