Sažetak
The present work was carried out to examine the effect of maternal oxy-gen inhalation on the experimentally produced uteroplacental insufficiency. Uterine artery ligation resulted in significant grovvth retardation in both groups, but vveights of fetuses from intact and ligated horns were un-changed by oxygen supplementation. At day 17 of gestation, the number of resorptions was similar in both ligated and intact horns, but that number sig-nificantly decreases after uterine artery ligation. Exposure to the additional oxygen concentrations resulted in increased survival of the fetuses from the ligated horn (67.3% in the oxygen exposed group versus 40% in the control group). These data indicate that additional oxygen improves the survival of fetuses compromised by uteroplacental insuf-ficiency, but it has no apparent effect on fetal grovvth retardation. The potential mechanisms by which maternal hyperoxia improves fetal survival are not clear from this study. Hovvever, increased maternal arterial PO2 vvould be expected to in-crease placental oxygen transfer and umbilical ven-ous PO2. The additional oxygen in collateral blood vessels is probably sufficient to compensate ligation of the uterine artery. These results strongly suggest further investigation of maternal oxygen therapy to obtain better insight into the function-ing of the fetoplacental unit.
