The subtler nuances of Stroop intererence
(Stroop effect; Interference)
Sažetak
The study and the results reported are a part of a wider research project whose aim is to study the feasibility of use of electrophysiological (ERP) measures of Stroop interference for neuropsychological diagnostic purposes. The aim of the reported study was twofold. First to start accumulating measurements for the control group, and second to directly test the differences between two types of neutral stimuli: verbal and nonverbal. To test the hypothesis that some amount of Stroop interference is already present in verbal neutral stimuli and to enable later finer comparison of patient and control groups, we have used both nonverbal XXXXX and verbal neutral stimuli, where words used were comparable in length and frequency to the colour words used in congruent and incongruent tasks. The experiment was carried out using computer presentation of stimuli (nonverbal, verbal, incongruent and congruent) presented in quasi-random order. The task of the participants was to name the colour of the stimulus as soon as it was presented. The verbal responses were coregistered with EEG signal and later analysed to determine reaction times. The preliminary results interference effect for both incongrunet and verbal neutral stimuli in comparison to nonverbal neutral stimuli, which warrants further research and opens the possibility of finer assessing of individual components of Stroop interference.
