Sažetak
The relationship between the physiological group of gelatinolytic bacteria and the abundance of heterotrophic bacteria in freshwater ecosystems was described. A thousand eighty two different freshwater samples in Croatia were tested. Percentages of gelatinolytic bacteria among the population of heterotrophic bacteria showed a significant negative correlation with the abundance of heterotrophic bacteria. The percentage of the physiological group of gelatinolytic bacteria among the population of heterotrophic bacteria, as a parameter, can serve as an indicator of the pollution degree of freshwaters. The high percent of gelatinolytic bacteria ( 76 %) always indicated the colony forming units of heterotrophic bacteria below 1000/mL, corresponding to the high water quality. The percent of gelatinolytic bacteria lower than 11 % indicated different polluted waters, which needs a water treatment to be used for certain purposes. Isolated strains of aerobically grown gelatinolytic bacteria were gram-negative rod-shaped or gram-positive endospore-forming rod-shaped cells.
