Sažetak
3-D modeling of biological structures of irregular shape and different materials is difficult and requires certain assumptions and approximations to create models applicable for the FEA. The purpose of the present study was to create a complex 3D model of an intact lower first premolar and its supporting structures, and to investigate aspects of its biomechanics under different loading conditions. Definitions of geometry and volume for all particular segments of tooth morphology were derived from digitalized lower right first premolar cross-sections. The FEA was performed with NASTRAN for Windows (MacNeal-Schwendler Corp, Costa Mesa, Calif). Mechanical properties for each material were acquired from average values of the literature. The final model consisted of approximately 125000 nodes and 500000 elements with total of 375000 degrees of freedom. Single to tripodal contact accumulative static load values of 100N – 600N were applied occlusally, parallel to the tooth long axis and in 45° angle to the long axis. Tripodal contact occlusal load parallel to the tooth long axis displayed somewhat consistent distribution with higher stress on the buccal aspects of the tooth and maximum stress values at the enamel-cementum junction (load 100N – stress 25.5 MPa) and apex of buccal root (load 100N – stress 23.5 MPa). Single contact parallel occlusal load displayed non-homogenous stress distribution with maximum values at the ECJ (load 100N – stress 74.76 MPa). Occlusal load at 45° angle to the long axis displayed maximum stresses at the CEJ and root furcation ranging from 78.8 MPa (load 100N) to 451.8 MPa (load 600N). Single contact eccentric occlusal load produces maximum stresses on tooth and its supporting structures, with highest values at the CEJ and root furcation. 3-D FEA has shown to be representative tool in investigating the biomechanics of complex structures.
