Sažetak
Fast liver growth, which follows after partial hepatectomy (pHx), is well-defined process, which involves the concerted action of extra and intracellular factors resulting in cell replication and its inhibition at the time when the entire liver mass is restored. Concomitantly, the breakdown of previously maintained tolerance and the exposure of self-antigens lead to the activation of pre-immune and immune repertoire, which thought cytolytic activities, participate in elimination of aberrant and superfluous cells in proliferating tissue. AIM: To evaluate the influence of olive and corn-oil enriched diets, containing different quantities of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids (MUFA and PUFA) on liver regeneration and tissue mineral content in the liver and lymphatic organs. METHODS: Male BALB/c mice, aged 2-4 months, were during the three weeks fed by diets enriched with olive or corn oil (5% addition to standard pellet, w/w) and then subjected to 1/3 pHx or sham operation. One, 2, 7 and 21 days later mice were sacrificed, and tissue content of Zn, Fe, Mg and Ca was determined in the liver, as well as in thymus and spleen, using the microwave digestion and ICP spectrometry. Mice in the control group were fed by standard laboratory food. RESULTS: Tissue content of Zn, Fe, Mg and Ca was significantly affected by pHx, and additionally changed by the diets. The early phase of regeneration was characterized by an accumulation of Zn and Ca in the liver and decreased concentration of Zn, Ca and Mg in the thymus and in the spleen, while in the latter phase of regeneration (on the 7th and 21st p.o. day), a marked accumulation of Zn, Mg and Ca was noticed particularly in the thymus. In mice fed by diet enriched by olive oil, containing primarily oleic acid (C18:1, n-9), and corn oil, containing mostly linoleic acid (C18:2, n-6) Zn-accumulation in the liver was significantly lower, while in the thymus on the 2nd p. o. day increased the concentration of Ca and Mg. The data also imply that olive-oil enriched diet had greater effects on Zn, Ca and Mg turnover in the thymus, in contrast to corn-oil diet, which more affected Zn and Ca content in the spleen. Furthermore, in mice fed by corn-oil diet, a high correlation was found between the zinc concentration in the thymus and remnant liver mass, pointing to the possibility that Zn-dependent hepato-thymic axis play a role in the activation and restrain of fast liver growth provoked by pHx. CONSLUSIONS: The data imply that diets containing MUFA or PUFA may modulate normal growth processes, provoking direct or indirect changes in the regenerating tissue, as well as in lymphatic organs, where tissue mineral content might influence several aspects of immunity (degree of oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, activities of matrix metalloproteinases, signal transduction pathways, cytokine production etc).
