Sažetak
Geochemical environment of the Croatian island Krk in northern Adriatic sea was characterized by analyses of soil, plant material and water samples for a number of chemical elements by using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence as an analytical tool. In addition, trace elements content of school children hair has been measured using the same analytical method for: Mg, S, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Hg and Pb. Concentrations maps of the twelve chemical elements characterizing island’ s geochemical environment were produced by interpolation of measured values using kriging gridding methodology and presented on the GIS-based map of the island Krk. The incidences of twelve groups of diseases during 5 years interval (1997-2001) for whole island population and for age groups ≤ 6, 7-19, 20-64, ≥ 65 years are presented for the individual island’ s communes. Mean concentrations values and concentration maps for the chemical elements could be used in the evaluation of chemical elements transffer from soils to plants, and through the food chain to the inhabitants of the island. The incidence of some of diseses (i.e. goiter) could be related to the chemical composition of the soil. In this report the observed differences for the seven island's communes have been discussed.
