Sažetak
The connection between diabetes mellitus and periodontitis has been well established. Diabetic condition may impair periodontal health in many ways, and corrupt the host response to opportunistic bacteria that cause periodontal disease. This article describes a case of a male patient (born 1963) with a long history of diabetes mellitus type I, severe aggressive periodontal disease, low socioeconomic status and smoking (22 packyears). Although he was admitted for periodontal therapy and included in supportive periodontal treatment, his periodontal condition deteriorated, leading to loss of seven strategical teeth and further loss of attachment (mean loss of attachment in one year 2.42 mm per tooth). Overall prognosis of the patient is poor inspite of great efforts in local periodontal therapeutic measures, the main causes of periodontitis being diabetes mellitus and smoking habit.
