Sažetak
Understanding the structure, stability, and dynamics of vesicles is important in elucidating biological self-assembly and in devising strategies for practical use of stable vesicles. In recent years it has been found that the vesicular structures forms spontaneously and is long-lived in certain surfactant systems (surfactants that are strongly hydrophylic and have large hydrophobic groups, like double chained or catanionic surfactants). It has been suggested that these structures may in fact constitute the equilibrium state. We have now found that mixtures of oppositely charged surfactants and biopolymers form small (SUV) and giant (GUV) vesicles with ease. Investigation of the phase behavior in dodecylammonium chloride (DDACl)/differently charged carrageenan (CAR) mixtures revealed the formation of single and coexisting phases. Several phase regions were identified as a function of concentration: (i) clear region containing vesicles and/or micelles and vesicles, (ii) turbid region containing precipitate and vesicles, and (iii) gel region. As the concentration of both components was increased, we detected formation of SUV at lower concentration, and mixtures of SUV and GUV at higher concentration. The increase of CAR charge density improved the degree of ordering in various surfactant-carrageenan species.
