Sažetak
Pet birds are taking a significant role among pet bird owners. After discovery of New World, Africa, Australia and Asia, an interest in pet birds developed among nobility and the marchant class. It brings to our region many new species of birds that are kept in cages. Today in EC countries about 38 million people are keeping pet birds. According to data available, in Germany for example, there are 7.8 million pet birds, 6.0 million cats and 5.0 million dogs kept privately. The importance of treating birds against different diseases increased continuously and is now taking about 30 % of total small veterinary practice. Out of 8500 known avian species in European countries, 500 are kept as pets. The diversity of these species is based on different size, anatomy and nutritional needs as well as ecologic needs. Because of many diseases related to the conditions of housing, it is necessary to get more and new experiences about climate condition, needs of lightning and nutritional needs that could be applied in daily practice of keeping exotic birds. This diversity of needs certainly has increased the importance of further knowledge among veterinarians treating birds, while the available literature is still poor. Fortunately, modern techniques and methods from the different fields of human and veterinary medicine can be transferred, miniaturised, and adopted, and applied to birds. Because of this, to the veterinarian there is available x-ray examination, ostesynthesis methods, endoscopy as well as different laboratory probes, nevertheless the referent values are very poor and are still missing for most of pet birds. In spite of obvious importance of birds for the daily living of humans, and its high commercial value, no specialised clinic or laboratory exists in Croatia. To attract the interest of our colleges, and at the same time to help them, we will stress the numerous health problems that are appearing in birds. Beside recognition of essential needs in keeping, feeding and generally handling birds during clinical examination and therapeutic procedures we are stressing the importance of taking detailed anamnestic data before clinical treatment. The most commons are diseases caused by nutritional disorders, behavioural diseases, and physical injuries. Birds are suffering diseases of respiratory, urogenital, cardiovascular as well as skeletomuscular system. Very common are diseases of feather, beak and cere. Of special importance in birds are some specific micro-organisms causing zoonotic diseases, such as chlamydiosis, salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis, pseudotuberculosis, avian tuberculosis, cryptosporidiosis, and aspergillosis, in addition to the viral diseases Newcastle disease and influenza. Treatment of birds is based on clinical appearance of the disease and the aetiology of disease. Other considerations include then route and frequency of administration, cost and ability of the bird owner to accomplish the treatment regimen. Because birds are often presented in a state of advanced illness and immunosuppression, the best drug should be given via the best route to maximize the chances for treatment success. Drugs available to the veterinarian unfortunately are not approved for use in birds and their activities and possible harmful effects or safety are not known in birds. We are mainly directed by positive or negative experiences of very few experts in this field. Finally, the aim of this article should raise an interest for pet birds among our colleges, responsible scientific institutions, and common veterinary practice. Certainly it should be expected from the responsible state administration.
