Sažetak
Salmonellosis caused by Salmonella enteritidis (S. enteritidis) is an important public health problem worldwide. In the control of Salmonella infection in poultry, there is a need to prevent its intestinal colonization. Rapid establishment of an adult intestinal microflora in young chicks increases their resistance to colonization by food-poisoning Salmonellae and provides a possible means of reducing infection in commercial poultry flocks. In this study, a commercial competitive exclusion (CE) product, AVIGUARD® ; (Bayer AG), was given to newly-hatched chicks raised under laboratory conditions to assess its efficacy in preventing colonization by S. enteritidis FT 9a. One-day-old commercial AVIAN fattening hybrid chicks (260) of mixed sex were allocated to 2 groups of 52 chicks. Two replicate trials were carried out. The chicks were individually dosed by gavage with 0.5 ml of physiological saline (controls) or with AVIGUARD® ; (trial groups) at day 0, day 1 and day 5. On day 2, eight birds per cage were challenged by oral gavage with 0.5 ml of an approximate 107 organism/ml dilution a S. enteritidis FT 9a strain and were used as seeders. The fifth day after challenge, and at 14 and 21 days of age, 12 chicks from each group were randomly selected and Salmonellae were counted in the caeca according to the conventional procedure. At age of 7 days infection was between 79 % (controls) and 100 % (trial groups) of chickens. At the age of 14 days in control chickens that did not receive AVIGUARD® ; , the level of chicken contamination was increased by 8.34 % and came to 87.50 % which was not a significant increase. In other groups there are significantly less infected chickens. Related to this, in trial group 2 (received AVIGUARD® ; ) there are infected 50 % chickens which is 50 % less than at age of 7 days. At the same time it was only slightly lowered the titer of S. enteritidis in intestinal content, from 104.04 to 103.92. In all chickens in experiment, at age between 14 and 21 days infection was reduced. Compared to control group this difference was statistically significant. It can be concluded that AVIGUARD® ; provided a significant protective effect against pathogenic S. enteritidis FT 9a that was used for challenge. Undoubtedly, by its activity, which was confirmed by comparison with control chickens, the level of infection was significantly reduced regarding the number of infected chickens as well as the number (bacterial titer) of S. enteritidis isolated from sacrificed chickens. Compared to control chickens the protection provided by AVIGUARD® ; was statistically different regardless the age at 14 or 21 day.
