Sažetak
This article provides a brief survey of specific comparative law issues when seen through the problems of modern comparative gastronomy. Particularly, the cases brought before European Court of Justice that concerned cheese are illustrative to that effect. Namely, it may be noted that universalism was often given priority over individual expectations. Such decisions were commonly justified by invoking one of the basic principles of the European Law &#8211 ; the free movement of goods. Nonetheless, also the opposite trends are discernible that aspire toward protection of traditional values and diverse products. In this respect the protected designation of origin plays an important role. This study of comparative food and gastronomy reflecting some major problems of our time leads to the conclusion that one should exercise tolerance towards long-lasting traditions and at the same time be perceptive of contemporary developments.
