Sažetak
Ballast water is generally considered to be the major contributor to the transfer of harmful invasive species. The introduction of non-indigenous species into new environment can provoke economic and ecological harm throughout the world. Even though many of ballast water management techniques exist, the only technique currently used worldwide is ballast water exchange in the open ocean. Since Croatian pipeline company JANAF has signed the treaty known by the name Druzba Adria project, the role of ballast water in the introduction of exotic species has recently received extensive attention of the Croatian public. This paper briefly reviews possibilities and methods for ballast water treatment.
