Sažetak
Furniture, being items of everyday use, is subject to continuous change. This is a result not only of technical progress, but above all of fashion, as well as of the education of producers and users. This is why the study of contemporary furniture should rely on the systematic analysis of its form, its construction and the methods of industrial-scale manufacturing in the 20th century. The subject of the paper is a selected group of furniture, mass- and serial produced in the 20th century and contemporarily. The objective of the paper is to analyse dominant trends in furniture design. In the first part of the paper the conditions for changes at the turn of the 19th century and their geographic regionalisation are presented, as well as their influence on the development of the furniture industry. Some groups of designers that revolutionised the form and production process of apartment furniture are also presented. The second part focuses on a selected and highly specialised group of office furniture, in terms of regionalisation, trends, industrial design, etc. At the moment it is very difficult to identify a clear style in world furniture design. However, it can be stated that Scandinavian, Italian and American design dominates in the area. In previous years a new German school of office furniture design had also developed. Thus some characteristic features of contemporary furniture construction can be identified. They are first of all geometrics, repeatability and modularity that allow for the rational use of room space. Unfortunately, these tendencies diminish the individuality of models, so emphasised in craft production.
