Sažetak
Bilingualism is the center of attention in much research, and bilinguals provide insights into understanding how the human brain works in different situations. When they are unable to express themselves in the appropriate or preferred manner, bilinguals often, consciously or not, use certain strategies that help them stay in the flow of a conversation. One of the most frequently used strategies for that purpose is code-switching. Despite lacking a universal definition, code- switching can be understood from many points of view. The main objective of this thesis is to present various forms of bilingualism, with a special focus on early childhood and family. The first part discusses the advantages and disadvantages of bilingualism, including some of the negative myths people have about the ability to use two languages. Next, types of code- switching are introduced and discussed, describing typical situations within families. The following part of this paper brings some insights into parents’ attitudes and practices in raising bilingual children. The concluding part of this thesis brings a discussion based on the described concepts and examples, followed by the conclusion.
