Sažetak
Fiumano is a Venetian dialect spoken by the Italian minority of the city of Rijeka in Croatia. In this paper, a historical overview of the linguistic and cultural context in which the dialect has developed is given, followed by our personal experience, as native speakers of Fiumano, of using it in our daily lives, starting from early childhood. Several specific elements of the dialect are outlined, and challenges regarding its preservation are pointed out. The idea for the translation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s book The Little Prince into the Fiumano dialect was born from the desire to pay tribute to our mother tongue, and to establish a contact between the spoken and the written word in Fiumano, especially among children and young people. The book El picio principe is a result of this project, which fits perfectly into the Rijeka 2020 European Capital of Culture programme concept “Port of Diversity”.
