Sažetak
Aim: To investigate can application of antiseptics and fluorides during orthodontic treatment influence working properties of nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwires. Subjects and methods: Archwires were collected from 18 subjects and compered with-received NiTi alloy wires. Three experimetal groups were formed: (I) subjects conducting regular oral hygiene, (II) subjects that used high concentration fluorides for intensive prophylaxis for a first month ; and (III) subjects that used chlorhexidine in the same manner. Six specimen from every experimental condition, each 2.5 cm long, were used for mechanical three-point bending test in the thermal chamber at 37°C on a universal machine (Model 1125/5500, Instron, USA). Each sample was deflected to 3.1 mm and then dropped to zero deflection at a crosshead speed of 0.0167 mm/s. NiTi alloy archwires (dimensions 0.508×0.508mm) were analised after 3 months of intraoral exposure and compared to as-received NiTi. Elastic modulus, yield strength, springback ratio and modulus of resilience were calculated. Statistical analyses included analysis of variance and Student-Newman- Keuls post-hoc test. Results: Intraoral exposure reduced elastic modulus, yield strength, springback ratio, modulus of resilience, loading and unloading forces of NiTi (p≤0.021). Chlorhexidine mouthwash and gel with high concentration of fluorides did not change the properties more than saliva with regular hygiene. Conclusion: Using antiseptics or high concentration of fluorides during orthodontic treatment does not significantly affect the elasticity of NiTi and would not have clinical implications in changing orthodontic biomechanics.
