Sažetak
In recent decades, rural communities and settlements in Istria, the most developed tourist region in Croatia, have been exposed to the effects of the development of the region's most important economic sector, as its development is no longer limited to the urban and urbanized centers along the coast, but is spreading to the interior of Istria, to the traditional rural communities. The increase in tourist activities in the rural parts of the region has led to noticeable changes that are reflected in the cultural landscape with the emergence of numerous second homes and other accommodation facilities, and also affect the population structure of local communities. Using orthophotography, satellite imagery and statistical data from the 2021 census, as well as other relevant data sources, the main goal of this study is to explore the changes that rural communities and the rural environment have undergone in recent decades in the peripheral rural areas of the Pula urban region, the most populous area of Istria, and to derive conclusions about the impact of the tourism sector on these rural settlements. The main results regarding the spatial expansion of the settlements showed a firm connection with the above-mentioned increasing trend of tourism activities in rural areas, as most of the growth of the built-up area within the settlements is due to the construction of second homes and similar facilities. Moreover, the statistical analysis of the recently collected population data indicates a depopulation trend in the last decade, which is prevalent throughout the region, further consolidating the previously established link between the expansion of settlements and the development of tourism.
