Sažetak
Relatively low social status, low financial compensation, ageing of the teacher population and the feminization of the teaching profession are some of the challenges that EU countries face in the field of education. On the individual level, teachers are facing high administrative burdens and changes related to their role in education, and are prone to experiencing emotional stress and burnout, especially female teachers. Parallel to their professional lives, they are also living their private lives navigating through their family and household obligations and work, which are also particularly taxing for female teachers. Some of these issues can contribute to their decision to leave teaching. The main objective of this analysis is to examine reasons for staying, leaving and returning to the teaching profession, while analyzing the development of teachers' private (family) life and changes in their attitudes towards teaching. In achieving this objective, thematic narrative analysis of three experienced female teachers’ stories was carried out. Work-life trajectories of these three teachers were selected based on their similarity in work experience, but in different outcomes, whereby (i) the first teacher left the profession to live abroad with her partner, (ii) the second left the profession wanting to start her own business but returned to the profession while (iii) the third considered leaving on several occasions but did not leave. The research was conducted from February to September 2022 in Croatia using a combined narrative and semi- structured interview method, in which interviews were conducted with three groups of teachers (a total of 22 teachers): those who want to remain working as teachers, those who are considering leaving, and those who left the profession. Results of this analysis show the complex relations and dynamics of female teachers’ work and family life especially in forming the decision to stay or leave the profession.
