Sažetak
Background: Donated human milk is the best possible alternative when mother’s own milk isn’t available. Croatian first and only Human Milk Bank (HMB) is opened as a part of Croatian Tissue and Cell Bank from University Hospital Centre Zagreb in November 2019. Objectives: Aim of this work is to present characteristics of human milk donors (HMD), which are healthy mothers of children younger than one year. Without the generosity and precious resource of these noble women, there would be no HMB either. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we analyzed the data on the HMD who were donating milk between November 15, 2019 and January 1, 2023. The data were collected from questionnaires filled out by HMD and documentation administered by HMB employees and presented using descriptive and comparative statistics. Results: The mean age of first Croatian HMD (n = 200) was 31.7 years. Most of them (81%) are from Zagreb and surrounding county. Almost half of HMD (49.5%) received the information from the internet. Proportion of HMD that had given birth to a premature infant is 14.5%, and they are particularly significant due to the possibility of donating excess of premature milk. The total volume of donated milk from first 200 HMD is 2144 L, which makes a mean of 10.7L per donor. Conclusion: It is important to be aware of the characteristics of previous HMD in order to direct the bank’s future promotional activities. Each donor is special and precious just like human milk which is not only food but also a cure to recipients.
